Frederic Vasseur believes Ferrari will continue to fight for the Constructors’ Championship with Red Bull Racing and McLaren until the end of the season, but on condition that the series of technical innovations that the Italian team will present at Monza will work with calculated efficiency.
After Lando Norris’ victory at Zandvoort, where Oscar Piastri also performed well in 4th place, McLaren is only 30 points behind Red Bull, while the Scuderia is in 3rd place in the teams’ standings, 34 points behind McLaren.
“I’m not thinking specifically about McLaren, I’m just trying to get the maximum benefit from upgrading the car to be as prepared as possible for Monza,” Racer quotes the Ferrari team boss as saying. “Then we’ll see what results we can show.” If you remember what happened a year ago in Zandvoort, one of our cars finished fifth and the other didn’t finish at all, but we were simply nowhere in qualifying.
But a week later, in Monza, we won pole position. This doesn’t mean that Ferrari will be on pole position this weekend, but this is roughly the scenario that has been going on since the very beginning of the season. I think after three races everyone was sure that Max Verstappen would secure the title halfway through the championship, but then we won a few races, then we added McLaren, then Mercedes, now McLaren is considered the favorite again, but I hope that Ferrari will come out again soon.
We just have to stick to the same approach: don’t jump to conclusions and predictions about where we will be in six races. The competition is fierce: everyone is doing their best. Everyone is trying to introduce technical innovations as quickly as possible and this week it’s our turn to present a modernized car.
It will continue like this until the end of the season. I think we are now about 60 points behind Red Bull, but 60 points is a bit more than you can earn in a good weekend… As always, it all depends on the nuances, but our car is better in short corners. That is a fact, and if we manage to add another tenner or two, that could change the balance of power…’
