On Friday, the Ferrari team boss spoke about updating the car and the championship chances…
Q: Frederic, based on the training results, can we say that the new products have worked and the team has improved?
Frederik Vasseur: I think there is no point in drawing conclusions yet. The last four or five races have been so intense that it is better to avoid such comments. We have a program for these two days, we will stick to it. So far it is going well.
Q: This weekend you installed several new items on the car. What do you hope to achieve with them?
Frederik Vasseur: Drive a little bit faster. We’ve actually made a huge step forward compared to 12 months ago. Of course, we’re all looking for consistency from session to session, from phase to phase, but we’ve been developing this car for three or four years. Getting more out of it is becoming increasingly difficult. You have to take risks. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes not so much.
Q: How do you assess the situation in the championship, where you are 64 points behind…
Frederik Vasseur: I have not and will not pay attention to the championship. We just have to work hard, do our best every weekend, and if something has to happen, it will happen.
The worst thing would be to focus on the championship now and take a conservative approach, because in the same weekend you can go from P1-2 to 7-8, a place that is due to strategy, tire management, whatever reason.
The situation can vary greatly from weekend to weekend. A good weekend is 43 points. We will soon have sprint weekends. This means that there are 55 points to earn over the weekend. I think there are still about 500 points to earn.
Q: Carlos Sainz said he doesn’t rule out the possibility of racing for Ferrari again. Would you like to work with him again in the future?
Frederik Vasseur: Definitely. I have a lot of respect for Carlos and what he did for Ferrari. Now he is doing a great job and he continues to be a professional in these difficult circumstances.
I see very well what he brings to the team. He was part of the recovery last year when we had a difficult moment in the summer. I will maintain a good relationship with him.
