Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finished first practice for the Italian Grand Prix outside the top ten, but Helmut Marko insists the team is in better shape than a week ago at Zandvoort.
Helmut Marko: “We’re in a better position than you might think when you look at the results. During a simulated qualifying lap, Max spun in the Parabolica corner. So far he had lost two tenths to Lando Norris, but unlike the others, Max’s engine was not set to full power.
For a long series of laps we showed a very competitive pace until the tires started to deteriorate. But when this happened, the loss of speed became noticeable. This happened after Max had to brake behind another car. We’ll figure it out.
In principle we are in a much better position than in Zandvoort. Yes, much better.”
