Williams driver Franco Colapinto had a good first day at his debut Italian Grand Prix. In the second practice he set the seventeenth fastest time, losing just over two tenths of a second to his partner.
Alex Albon posted the thirteenth fastest time and said he had not yet found the optimum settings to make the car fast over a long distance or on a single fast lap.
Alex Albon (13th): “Basically everything was fine today, except for a series of laps on Soft in the second practice. We have a good pace, but the gaps are minimal, so we still have to work.
“I suppose tomorrow we have to choose between qualifying and race pace. We see serious granulation which is damaging to the tyres. It is not yet possible to find such settings so that the car is fast, both in qualifying and in a long series of laps, but we will see what decision we come to.”
Franco Colapinto (17th): “I am very proud to have completed my first Friday as a Formula 1 driver. The team and I still have some work to do, but the first day went well.
Instead of aiming for lap times, I focused on gradually improving each session. I was cautious in the first practice because I wanted to do as many laps as possible.
I’m still trying to figure out how to work with tyres in the long term to extend their lifespan. In the second session I felt more comfortable and tried to find the limit of what was acceptable. The lap times have become more consistent – a good step forward in increasing my confidence. “I’m very grateful to everyone in the team for helping me get up to speed this weekend.”
