Lando Norris: We’ve taken another step forward

Both McLaren drivers showed reasonably good results after Friday’s practice sessions at Monza, but according to Lando Norris they could have been even better, so the team has something to work on.

Lando Norris (2nd): “In the first session everyone had a bit of grip, but in the second practice the track condition had improved noticeably. Probably I was the one who didn’t manage to make the progress that needed to be made. I mean, the car was quite fast.

Oscar could have shown an excellent result too, but he made a serious mistake and lost four to five tenths. Without this he could have easily finished in first place, and his advantage would have been very noticeable. In general, we still have something to work on.

“However, this is only the second practice and we have made another step forward. But the results are very close: Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and we are more or less on the same level. Of course, all eight cars are very fast, so tomorrow we will have an interesting qualifying session.”

Oscar Piastri (4th): “I would say we went through the session with a lot of confidence. Of course, we still need to work on some aspects, but the car can handle a good pace and we have the potential. Today everyone was interested in how the tyres will perform, but we will see what happens in the remaining days of the weekend.

It seems that Monza has become something different after the reconstruction: the asphalt surface has been renewed, the curbs have been replaced and it takes some time to get used to it.

We also have to adapt to high temperatures, because today it was very hot, but in Monza the physical activity is not so great, because there are long straights where you can catch your breath, and there is enough fresh air. Although in high temperatures difficulties begin with rubber, but here everything is in an equal position.

“The asphalt here is certainly not as hot as some of the other circuits we have competed on this year, but it is clear that Monza is also quite hot.”
