Tim Tramnitz won the Formula 3 season finale in Monza on Saturday. Sebastian Montoya and Santiago Ramos climbed onto the podium with him.
After the warm-up lap, the drivers were on the grid, and at that moment Christian Mansell stopped and actively signaled this to the stewards. An extra warm-up lap was given. Mansell was still able to start, but had to start from the pit lane. The race distance was reduced to 17 laps.
Pole holder Tim Tramnitz retained the lead at the start, while Sebastian Montoya overtook Dino Beganovic at the first corner to move up from third to second. On the second lap, Joshua Dufek locked his tires before the first corner and, to avoid colliding with his rivals’ cars, cut the first chicane.
In the same first corner of the second lap, Nikita Bedrin and Noel Leon collided after Leon was sent into a spin by Tommy Smith. The race ended for Bedrin and Leon and the safety car was brought out. Stewards later gave Smith a 10-second time penalty.
The restart took place on lap six. Tramnitz confidently pulled away from the pack and Beganovic tried to attack Montoya, but Sebastian defended second place and Dino himself was overtaken by Ramos in the second chicane. Championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli moved up to tenth place. On lap seven, Fornaroli gained another position by overtaking Arvid Lindblad on the straight ahead of Ascari.
On lap nine, Ramos Montoya successfully attacked in the first corner and moved up to second place. Fornaroli moved up to eighth place and overtook Stenshorn. On lap ten, Luke Browning, in the battle for tenth place, passed Lindblad before the second chicane.
Fornaroli continued to gain ground and by lap 11 he had climbed to seventh place, overtaking Marie Boya. On lap 12 Montoya returned to second place after overtaking Ramos at the first chicane. On the following lap Mari Boya overtook Fornaroli with the same manoeuvre.
Behind them, Max Esterson and Peter Vishnitsky collided in the first chicane. The safety car came out for the second time.
The restart was given on the final lap. The top three held their positions, with Alex Dunne and Dino Beganovic overtaking Sami Megetunif, who dropped from fourth to sixth. Luke Browning overtook Fornaroli in the battle for eighth, and at the finish he was also ahead of Boyu, moving up to seventh.
Tim Tramnitz took his first Formula 3 victory. Montoya’s second place allowed Sebastian to repeat his best result of the season. Santiago Ramos’ third place gave him his first career podium.
Of the three contenders for the title, Luke Browning showed the best result: seventh place. The leader of the individual championship, Leonardo Fornaroli, finished ninth and set the best lap. The second-placed Gabriele Mini received one point for tenth place.
The fate of the Formula 3 title will be decided during the final race on Sunday in Monza. At the moment, the top three in the individual standings are: Fornaroli (132 points), Mini (129 points) and Browning (127 points).
