McLaren Racing Executive Director Zak Brown praised his team’s results in qualifying at Monza, where Lando Norris took first place and Oscar Piastri took second, losing just over a tenth to his team-mate.
Zac Brown: “A great job by Lando and Oscar, and of course our whole team. We gave the drivers fast cars and they completed their task. It was really fun to watch.
We thought we could fight for pole position, but many could have claimed it, given the high density of results. But of course we are happy to have taken the entire front row. I hope that this will give us a clear track during the race, which is exactly what we need.
The MCL38 has a good pace, but the same can be said about Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. I believe we will have an amazingly interesting battle on the track tomorrow!
Lando has always been a quiet guy, but now that he is winning pole positions and races one after the other, it is getting a bit easier. The same can be said about Oscar.
In Zandvoort Lando didn’t have the best start, but that wasn’t his fault: in the second acceleration phase the drive wheels didn’t have enough grip on the track and we tried to solve this problem. So our drivers have to do everything exactly the same as in the Netherlands and we will try to make the cars accelerate a bit better.”
Brown was also asked whether it was time for McLaren to adopt team tactics and focus on Norris, who retains his title chances despite a noticeable gap behind Max Verstappen in the individual competition.
“Andrea Stella, the team leader, and I will have a conversation about this topic,” he replied. – We are fighting for both the Constructors’ Championship and for winning the championship, so we will see how the further events develop, but we are seriously aiming to win in both categories. Oscar understands this well and is happy to give the team all the support he can.
But we will discuss everything behind closed doors and talk about it when we decide for ourselves. However, it is a real luxury when you have to solve such problems!”
