Izola: Everyone will try to get through with one pit stop

Pirelli is pleased with the performance of the tyres in the difficult conditions of hot Monza and is looking forward to one pit stop in tomorrow’s race…

Mario IsolaMotorsport Director: “Excellent qualifying with close competition from the top four teams. McLaren proved the versatility of their car by taking pole at the cool, tight and twisty Zandvoort last week, and today at the Temple of Speed on a typically warm day in the Italian summer.

Temperature will also play a major role in the race. Tomorrow the weather is expected to be more or less the same, which certainly won’t help the teams and drivers to keep an eye on the condition of their tires.

Granulation can be a factor in choosing a two-stop strategy, so all drivers except Tsunoda decided to keep two sets of hard tyres for the race, so as not to lose the choice in the event of a stoppage.

Due to the long pit lane, the race in Monza is usually a one-stop race, so the strategy of using one set of C4 and one set of C3, with a tire change around lap 20-26, seems to be the fastest. For those who decide to extend the first segment, the opposite option is also suitable: changing tires on laps 26-32.

This year the option of two pit stops with one Medium kit and two Hard kits is not ruled out.

I think everyone will try to limit themselves to one pit stop and keep a close eye on the tyres, especially in the first laps after leaving the track, so as not to put too much stress on the tyres, but still have a backup option thanks to two sets of Difficult.

I am pleased to say that our pre-qualifying assumptions of a 1:19.1 pole time in cooler weather than was actually the case proved correct even in the unusual conditions, as we had very little data on the performance of the new asphalt.”
