Sauber drivers took up the last row of the grid at Monza and posted the nineteenth and twentieth fastest times in qualifying. Valtteri Bottas complained that he could not reach more because he was hindered by yellow flags on his final attempt.
Valtteri Bottas (19th): “It seems like we could have done better today, so I’m disappointed with 19th place. The first flying lap went quite well, the track condition kept improving and I could have continued to the second part, but the yellow flags at the end of the first session took that chance away.
The third practice proved to be more difficult than the first and second, so for qualifying we went back to Friday’s settings. In them the car drove better, but I was not lucky enough and could not improve because of the yellow flags on the last attempt.
It remains to be seen what outcome would have been possible, but it seems we are in a slightly better position than last weekend.
During a race, monitoring tyre wear will be crucial. I hope we will have the opportunity to overtake our rivals and improve our position on the track.”
Guanyu Zhou (20th): “Qualifying today was quite disappointing. We know we could have done better.
My last lap started promising, at least better than the previous one. But then the cars in front started to go off track, which forced me to slow down and I couldn’t show the result. I’m sure that without these incidents I would have taken a higher starting position and would have been much closer to the second part.
Despite the difficult qualifying, the car drove better than in the morning practice. We will try to take advantage of this in the race, regain positions and learn as much as possible.”
