McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown made it clear ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, where Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will start from the front row, that they have the right to compete with each other, but that they have the best interests of the team at heart.
Zak Brown: “I’m always nervous before the start of a race, and at this circuit there’s such a long acceleration into Turn 1… Plus the results are very tight, so I don’t expect us to be as close today as we were to winning in the Netherlands. That would be great.
I think all drivers who start from the top seven positions have a chance to win this race. When we talk about team tactics, we spoke with both of our drivers before the start and they understand that the interests of the team come first, but at the same time they can easily compete with each other.
Let’s see how our tactics work, as events on the track can develop according to different scenarios, but it is clear that the course of the race will be influenced by the behavior of the tires.
Yesterday our driver Pato O’Ward won the IndyCar race, today the McLaren youth program driver won the Formula 2 race, so now it’s up to Lando and Oscar!”
