Daniel Ricciardo was given two penalty points during the Monza race. The first, five seconds, was for pushing Nico Hulkenberg off the track in turn eight. The second penalty, ten seconds, was for incorrectly serving the first penalty during the pit stop – the team mechanic touched the front wing of the Australian’s car beforehand. In the final race report, Ricciardo was in thirteenth place.
His RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda retired early in the race after his car was damaged following a collision with Nico Hulkenberg.
Daniel Ricciardo (13th): “In the end, we weren’t fast enough today, even without penalties. But we tried. I enjoyed fighting wheel to wheel at the beginning, but then I collided with Nico in turn eight.
I spoke to him after the finish. I thought I had left him enough space, but since there was contact, there was not enough space, so I apologized. A difficult race where every little thing mattered.
“My car was not damaged and I attacked with all my might. I pushed the car as hard as I could from Friday to Sunday and I feel like I did a much better job this weekend. We were close to getting points.”
Yuki Tsunoda (meeting): “I am very upset. It is a pity that my race ended a few laps after the start because of a collision with Nico Hulkenberg. I tried to give him as much space as possible, but he locked his wheels, lost control of the car and crashed into me.
Unfortunately the bottom of the car was damaged and we had to get out. I realized this immediately but tried to continue driving but the car kept sliding and it was simply impossible to control it.
Stages in Baku and Singapore are coming up. Our car should be fast on these tracks. I hope we have a good weekend ahead.”
