Marco: Our courageous actions were the deciding factor

Red Bull’s double win at Imola against the backdrop of Ferrari’s uneven performance enabled Milton Keynes’ team not only to reach 2nd place in the Constructors’ Championship, but also to narrow the gap with the championship leaders to 11 points.

With only Sergio Pérez reaching the finish line in Australia two weeks ago and Max Verstappen retiring due to a technical problem, Helmut Marko now had a reason to comment on the Italian weekend’s results: “This should be our answer!”

In an interview with Sky Sports, a Red Bull motorsports adviser explained how the team could add speed: technical innovations, and they all proved to be effective. That’s why our head of the aerodynamics department went to the podium with the drivers after the finish.

Everything else cannot be commented on, as nothing jeopardized Verstappen’s victory. For us this race can even be called boring, although we had to get nervous, because it still consisted of 60 laps that still had to be driven. But it was easy for Max and Sergio Perez also did everything right.

This should be our reaction after what happened in Melbourne. This time everything worked perfectly, and it was just impossible to achieve more. We are losing hope for the title as it is clear that the battle for championship victory continues. But the rivalry is sharp, Ferrari is very strong, so we have to do our best and keep working.

But most importantly we have two very strong racers and Perez is getting more confident so we have reason to be optimistic. Our biggest problem was the reliability of the car, but we hope we were able to solve it.

We understood that we had to put pressure on Ferrari. Leclerc crashed several times on Friday, and then it happened in the race too – he was just lucky to be able to continue it. So we have to keep attacking them.”

Marco also allowed himself a biting remark about Lewis Hamilton, who only finished 13th in yesterday’s race: “We beat him by a lap. Perhaps he now feels that his career should have ended last year.
