Kevin Magnussen finished ninth at Monza, but after adding a 10-second penalty to his result for a collision with Pierre Gasly, he moved up to tenth on the race report.
In addition to the time added to his score, Kevin was given two penalty points, bringing his total to twelve over the twelve-month period. This means missing the next stage in Baku, which was confirmed by team leader Ayo Komatsu.
Nico Hulkenberg was also given two penalty points for his collision with Yuki Tsunoda. The German rider has now scored 4 points in the last 12 months.
Kevin Magnussen (10th): “I am happy with the race but disappointed with the penalty. I made a slight contact with Gasly’s car in turn 4 and we both cut him off. But neither car was damaged, there were no consequences. And we fought in the race.
I’m happy to get one point today, I’m happy with the balance, the speed of the car and the strategy.”
Nico Hulkenberg (17th): “Bad first lap. Before Turn 8 I accelerated well behind Daniel Ricciardo and took the inside radius, but he turned the corner and left me no space. We had a collision and I went off the track for a bit.
The engine mode was on, so it didn’t stall, so I had to deal with it and that made me lose even more positions. Afterwards it became clear that there was a difficult race ahead.
Then there was a racing incident with Yuki Tsunoda where I damaged the front wing and got a penalty, which I had to serve and lost even more time.
It’s great that Kevin had a strong race and earned one point.”
Ayo KomatsuTeam Principal: “It’s nice to get one point. It’s especially nice to do it in Monza on a circuit with low downforce, where we haven’t been very competitive in recent years. The result shows that the team has done a good job and delivered a competitive aerodynamic package with low downforce.
Kevin was doing his best to create a 10 second lead over Fernando Alonso when he was notified of the penalty. It’s incredible how close he got to Alex Albon – great fight.
On the other hand, we shouldn’t have left Kevin behind Gasly. We worked again [на пит-стопе] not in the best way and now we need to improve on this aspect.
Nico’s race was ruined from the very beginning and he couldn’t do anything about it. The positive results include both drivers being happy with the car, especially its stability, which allowed them to attack.
After the race Kevin was given two penalty points, which means he is disqualified from participating in one race and will therefore not compete in Baku.”
