Carlos Sainz was happy that Ferrari won the Italian Grand Prix and was not too upset about finishing fourth, especially as he contributed to his teammate’s victory, holding off Oscar Piastri somewhat, who was quickly closing the gap to the leader in the final laps.
The Australian McLaren driver, while driving behind Sainz’s Ferrari, used up some of the life of his tyres as he overtook him, ultimately failing to pass Leclerc.
“It is a pleasure to see Ferrari win, but on the other hand Monza is a very special track”, said Carlos. – We still have to see how our latest new products will perform on other circuits – then it will be clear whether the course of our season will change, whether we will be able to fight for victories regularly or whether we will return to our previous positions.
In general, I will be honest that I am not sure about anything yet. I will have to try it out for a few races – I think the next “normal” circuit will be Austin. Obviously, the next two races in Baku and Singapore will also be on circuits that are specific in their own way. And on the American circuit we will see how well our car will perform.
“As for the episode on the first lap, when Piastri got ahead of his teammate, I didn’t see it. When you’re behind two McLaren cars, it’s not clear who’s who, so I can’t say what happened between them, but it confirms once again that in Formula 1 there are no friends and you can’t trust anyone.”
