Ferrari upgrades hybrid system for Spa podium

Ferrari has prepared an update to the hybrid power plant system and plans to present it on the Belgian championship podium.

Under the rules in force in 2022, the modernization of a number of elements of power plants has been frozen after March 1, including the completion of the internal combustion engine, turbocharger and engine generator MGU-H. It is only allowed to make some improvements aimed at improving reliability, but this is always discussed separately with the FIA.

However, the MGU-K engine generator, energy storage and control electronics may be upgraded until September 1, provided this work has not been done earlier in the season.

Ferrari power plants failed on the machines of the factory team as well as on the Italian company’s customers. Charles Leclerc stopped the race twice due to engine problems – in Spain and in Azerbaijan, and his partner, Carlos Sainz, had problems in Austria and they were accompanied by a fire in the car.

“We look forward to improving the efficiency of the hybrid system, which will help us throughout the period of the engine development moratorium,” said Mattia Binotto, head of Scuderia. “We are working hard on it, but this will not be a turning point. I don’t think this should be seen as a strategic decision, but rather as a result of the problems we have encountered. If your engine is not only the most powerful, but also is the most reliable, it is always better.”

Mercedes, Renault and Red Bull Powertrains, ie three other engine manufacturers have not yet announced their plans for modernization. After September 1, the specification of power plants should remain unchanged until the end of 2025, after which Formula 1 should switch to a new generation of engines in 2026.
