In Monza, Andrea Kimi Antonelli made his debut behind the wheel of Formula 1 as part of the official race weekend. The young Italian driver had to drive his first practice, but the session ended for him as soon as it started: after ten minutes he crashed with the car.
Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin said the team will emphasise gradually increasing Antonelli’s speed as he prepares for the next stages.
Andrew Shovlin: “It’s a bit of a shame that he crashed the car at Parabolica. Kimi had really good pace, but we’ll talk to him about how we can soften it up a bit in the future as the session progresses and what approach we need to take during the race weekend. Now we’re preparing to get him back in the car, but for that we need to choose a suitable circuit.
There are still many sprint stages ahead and on weekends like this we don’t want the main riders to lose their only practice session. So our choice is limited, but Kimi will definitely be back behind the wheel [в этом сезоне]”
