In the summer, the Sauber team was strengthened by two leading specialists: Mattia Binotto was appointed Chief Operating and Technical Director of Sauber Motorsport AG and Jonathan Whitley was signed as Team Principal.
In his new role, Binotto will effectively lead Audi’s project to establish a works Formula 1 team, with responsibility for strategic planning, while Wheatley is expected to assume overall operational management of the team. However, Whitley will have to serve a mandatory leave of absence after leaving Red Bull Racing, meaning he will not be able to drive until July 2025.
Mattia Binotto said in an interview with Germany’s Sky that Wheatley, before joining Sauber, would combine his main job with his duties as team manager: “I know very well what it is like to hold two positions in Formula 1, so I accept this job. However, I will not come to all the races.”
During his time at Ferrari, Mattia Binotto combined the roles of team manager and technical director for a number of years.
