Kimi Raikkonen: Formula 1 is still interesting to me

During the Italian Grand Prix, the attention of journalists was not only focused on the teams, drivers and events on the circuit. Kimi Raikkonen, who appeared with his family in the paddock of Monza, also came under the attention of the press, and although it was said that the 2007 world champion was not in the mood for an interview (this is a normal state of affairs for him), he made an exception for the official website of the championship.

Raikkonen retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2021, but remains one of the most popular drivers in the world and everyone was delighted when he was photographed in the Sauber pits last weekend. His glorious career began with this team in 2001 and ended there after 350 Grands Prix (although it was then still called Alfa Romeo). Although he of course achieved his most important successes during the battle for McLaren and Ferrari.

“Everything is fine! “I visited a lot of people here and in general it is nice to be back in the paddock,” said Kimi. – The children wanted to come here to visit, they liked everything, and we also saw a lot of old acquaintances. So there is nothing to complain about. It is clear that in the teams we were with there were a lot of new faces – in general everything changes quickly.

There is plenty to do, because we moved to Italy and I am the mechanic for Robin (9-year-old Raikkonen Jr. is making his first progress in karting), Rihanna is doing gymnastics and we also have little Grace, so I have a very busy family life and everything is great. Robin loves karting, but we will see if we can get something done or not. It is difficult to make a wish, but so far he is having fun, and that is the most important thing.

I don’t follow Formula 1 that closely, because there is always something to do with the kids and family. But when we are at home, and if I have time, I watch the races on TV. I am still interested in this, although it is clear that I have less information now, not like before. However, I always watch the races with interest, because it seems that the competition on the circuits has become more intense now, and this is good for both F1 and the fans.

When Raikkonen was asked if he knew that his namesake, Kimi Antonelli, was now in Formula 1, he replied: “Yes, I heard about it! When we arrived in the paddock, someone told me that Mercedes had just confirmed the contract with him. It’s great that there are new faces, and next year several new drivers will make their debut in the championship teams. Also, it’s nice that an Italian driver is coming, I think it’s good for everyone.

I have no doubt that Mercedes will be able to prepare Antonelli for his debut, especially since the teams have simulators. When I started my career, there was none of that, of course, you just had to get behind the wheel and go out on the track. I wish all the young drivers, and everyone in general, the very best!”
