The organizers of the off-road electric series Extreme E have announced that they would reconsider the end of the season – in effect this means that the remaining stages on the Italian island of Sardinia and in the USA (i.e. 6 races) have been canceled.
As is clear from the press release published today, “alternative solutions” are being sought, while the revision of the seasonal calendar is a necessary measure in connection with the upcoming transition to hydrogen power stations, after which the series will be renamed Extreme H. .
“We continue our transition to Extreme H and are determined to become the first hydrogen racing series in the world,” said Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of Extreme E. “In this transition year, we all want to find an opportunity to complete Extreme E so that we can dedicate maximum resources to the Extreme H program.
We would like to thank the Italian Automobile Club ACI and the Sardinia Region, as well as our team involved in the preparation of the Phoenix round, for their support and understanding during the last weeks. We remain open to further collaboration.
In close consultation with our teams and shareholders, we are looking for alternative solutions for the final season of Extreme E.”
The press release from the series organizers also states that the development process of the new Pioneer 25 SUV is in full swing and that the car, equipped with a hydrogen power plant, successfully passed the mandatory FIA crash tests at the end of August.
The next step should be testing the strength and safety of the new car’s tanks and battery packs. This work will also be supervised by the federation, after which full-scale testing of the Pioneer 25 on the track is planned for late September and October.
McLaren Racing, whose NEOM McLaren Extreme E team competes in the off-road series, has already expressed its dissatisfaction with this development of events: “Such news is worrying, as the team was preparing to return to the track, to fight for podiums and victories… We await additional information from Extreme E.”
