Bottas crossed the Mediterranean on… a bicycle

It has long been known that Valtteri Bottas likes to pedal, but as a rule he still does it on dry land, but this weekend the Finnish driver took part in a somewhat unusual competition that took place in a different element.

This time Valtteri crossed the Mediterranean Sea by bike – at least that’s how he commented on this fact in his sports biography on social networks.

Of course it was a water bike, or this type of water scooter is also called a hydrobike. But first things first.

On September 6 and 7, the Princess of Monaco Foundation organized for the second time a charity water bike relay, the route of which went from the island of Corsica to the port of Monaco. To be precise, this part of the Mediterranean is called the Ligurian Sea, but these are already geographical details.

In 24 hours, five teams of four people each had to cover more than 180 km across the sea. The task was not easy, as the hydrobike had to be pedaled in various conditions, including at night, overcoming waves and fighting the wind. The project does not only have sporting objectives; it also aims to draw attention to water safety issues.

This is how Valtteri described it: “We crossed the Mediterranean. Our Serenity crew of four left Corsica on Friday morning and reached Monaco about 22 hours later. It was an unforgettable experience!..

It was great to take part in such competitions as an ambassador for the Princess Charlene Foundation and we raised a lot of money that went to very good causes!”

Valtteri didn’t mention it, but judging from the information on the foundation’s website, his team was sometimes even in the lead, but was third at the finish of the relay. However, this is probably not so important in such projects – the important thing is that everyone enjoyed it!
