Andretti: Let them explain to us what is wrong in our project

During the Hungarian race weekend, Toto Wolff outlined the reasons why the FIA is in no rush to consider the application for the creation of the 11th Formula 1 team, submitted on behalf of Andretti Global, a project by Michael Andretti.

We quoted the words of the head of the Mercedes team, and now Mario Andretti, world champion in 1978, responded in an interview with the Spanish edition of Motorlat. The legendary American driver takes pity on his son, who has achieved great success in the motorsport industry in various racing categories, and for some reason he is not only expected in Formula 1.

“Michael has been talking about this project for at least five years. He is expanding his racing activities and has even reached Australia. Like all of us, he lives and breathes racing,” said Andretti Sr. – Why not get into Formula 1?

Gene Haas has succeeded, although it can’t be said that he is a racer to the very marrow of his bones – and we are real racers. Michael has reliable financing, serious and capable people work with him. Everything is ready for a long-term project.

Obviously we have encountered some resistance, and this is very frustrating. Are we going to give up? No. I think we deserve a place in Formula 1.

Toto said he would have preferred Audi to be the 11th team in the championship. I believe that this company will be accepted everywhere with pleasure, there are no questions about that. But in my opinion Audi is not going to create a new team. It seems to me that they are planning to merge with one of the existing top teams to become engine suppliers.

I’ll tell you why: it’s easier to justify the investment. In the case of a team, if it achieves victories, it is also a credit to the engine manufacturer. If she doesn’t get any wins, the team itself is to blame. It’s always been that way, and that’s okay.

We are already working with existing suppliers to prepare for certain decisions, because that’s how it should be. But the problem is that automakers come and go. And we’re not leaving – we’re coming to stay. Car manufacturers are not dependent on sports, unlike us. Racing is our life, we do nothing else. Why are we denied this opportunity? We have the most serious intentions.

Let them explain to us what exactly isn’t right for us in our project, and maybe we can fix it. Be specific about what’s wrong and we can probably provide more information. Maybe it’s not really what you imagine.”
