Oscar Piastri won the race in Baku for the second victory of his career, Lando Norris took 4th place and the McLaren team took the lead in the Constructors’ Championship.
Oscar Piastri (1st): “I tried to take the lead at the beginning of the race, but as soon as I missed the opportunity to use DRS, I simply didn’t have enough speed to attack Charles Leclerc.
After the pit stop the gap between us was noticeably reduced again and I felt my car was holding the track a bit better, so I had to try to overtake. I knew that if I didn’t do this at the beginning of the stint I would never be able to get ahead of the Ferrari.
I planned a rather daring manoeuvre and it worked, after which I had to do everything I could for the next 35 laps to stay ahead. As soon as Leclerc fell behind and couldn’t use DRS anymore, I felt a bit calmer, although relaxing on this track was generally impossible. I had to work hard, but I can definitely say that it was one of the best races of my career.
If we remember where we started, when I started racing for McLaren last year, we were almost last and now we are leading the Constructors’ Championship. This is entirely the credit of the whole team, because in a year and a half they have been able to change the course of events.
First of all, she managed to increase the speed of the car, but she also helped me to improve. 12 months ago, I was absolutely not capable of such results. Together we have achieved success, and now I am excited about the prospects that are opening up.”
