In the final stage in Baku, Sauber representative Alessandro Aluni Bravi said that the team is considering a number of candidates for the 2025 seat in addition to Valtteri Bottas. In Singapore, the Finn had to answer questions about the contract again at the FIA press conference.
Valtteri Bottas: “I don’t have a specific date for when the contract has to be signed. After Mattia Binotto joined the team, we negotiated a lot with him and Alessandro. I can’t give more details and I am now fully focused on this weekend’s race. But a good sign is that after Singapore we will continue the negotiations. Let’s see where they lead.”
The special thing about our sport is that when you fight at the back of the pack, it is less noticeable what results you are capable of. In principle, you have to compare your results with the results of your partner.
The fact that I can’t fight for points, that I can’t fight at the front, certainly doesn’t help in the current situation, but there are people in the paddock who understand my true capabilities. The team also knows how I work every weekend and that’s the most important thing. The people who should know what I’m capable of, do. That’s all that matters.
I continue to drive in the same way as I did at Mercedes, especially in qualifying. This year I don’t see any signs that I have become a worse pilot. Moreover, I have become even better: with experience you fly more stable and confident, you can solve problems in different ways and adapt better to the car. I feel that I am now a better driver than at Mercedes. But that is not visible from the outside.”
Asked about Sauber’s prospects in Singapore, Valtteri said: “The last few races have definitely been difficult for us and we don’t expect an easy weekend in Singapore either because we don’t have any technical innovations. The circuit is a little bit different to Baku – here you have to tune the cars to a different level of downforce. We have to look better, but the team doesn’t expect any magical progress.”
