Oscar Piastri: I have no illusions

Oscar Piastri promised that he would try to fight for a high result in Singapore and called the victory in the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan his most important achievement. At the same time, the McLaren driver made it clear that he does not consider himself a real contender for the title.

Oscar Piastri: “I definitely consider the victory in Baku as a more important achievement than the first victory in Hungary. I had to put in much more effort and withstand much more pressure, so the taste of success was much sweeter.

Don’t get me wrong, the win in Hungary was special, but in Baku I had to work so hard for such a long stretch of the race that I’m willing to call that race the highlight, even though I don’t consider it a highlight. my performance the best. The emotions I experienced afterwards were extremely nice for other reasons.

But I can honestly say that I hardly think about the title. I consider it a much more important task to help the team maintain the lead in the Constructors’ Championship. I still have a theoretical chance to win the championship, but for that I have to earn 10 points more than Max Verstappen every weekend, and that is hardly possible.

I can try to challenge for victory in every Grand Prix, but to make that possible for seven races in a row, other factors have to work, and that is unrealistic. Of course, I will do everything I can every weekend to show the best possible results, and if the prospects improve, that can be seen as a bonus.

But of course I have no illusions and I understand that if I want to have a chance to fight for the title, the events have to develop according to some crazy scenario.

After the win in Baku I was in a good mood for a few days, because it is always nice to remember a race you have run in such a way that you can be proud of it. Although I have not celebrated my success for so long and I am ready for another attempt this weekend. The two city circuits have similarities, but there are many more differences, but I believe we should be competitive in Singapore.

It is also good that a 4th DRS zone has appeared on this circuit: I have already seen that the activation point is quite early, and by the 15th corner you can already reach a good speed. I hope that all this will contribute to a more interesting fight.”
