Russell: You have to understand what the challenges are

The end of the second practice session at the Marina Bay circuit must have brought back memories for George Russell of the final lap of last year’s Singapore Grand Prix, when he crashed his car when he should have been on the podium.

Today he didn’t damage his W15 that badly, but the front fender was blown off and the suspension on the left side of the car also seemed damaged. Lewis Hamilton, his Mercedes teammate, didn’t even make it into the top ten before admitting that he didn’t understand why the car had no speed.

George Russel (7th): “There is not much to tell: I locked the brakes and the car lost its front wing. But Friday was generally very difficult for us, and now we have to find out the reasons for this.

I have no doubt that we will get some answers tonight, but already in the break between the two sessions today we had to make serious changes to the set-up. The car does not make as good an impression as it did a year ago at this circuit or in some recent races.

Of course we hope to improve tomorrow, because today we had something to be surprised about. Not only did we lack pace compared to the leaders, but it turned out that the Visa RB cars were also very fast and that Williams had improved recently, although Red Bull seemed to have some small problems.

“McLaren and Ferrari have a comfortable lead and we need to understand what the challenges are if we are to compete for top results.”

Lewis Hamilton (11th): “A very difficult day. I couldn’t achieve normal riding sensations at all, although we tried many different approaches to the settings, but didn’t make much progress.

The team worked hard, trying to push the pace and close the gap to the leaders, but it wasn’t until the end of the second practice that we were able to do it. As we worked through the settings, it was hard to know which way to go, and we’ll have to figure that out tonight.

We definitely have to find a way to increase the speed, otherwise the difficulties will continue on Saturday.”
