Toto Wolff commented on the scandal surrounding Max Verstappen during the Singapore Grand Prix. The FIA fined the Red Bull Racing driver for blasphemy, and in response Max began boycotting official press conferences. The head of the Mercedes team believes that if drivers are banned from showing emotions, Formula 1 risks losing some of its appeal.
Toto Wolff: “There is an opinion that swearing and rude communication should not happen on the radio, because it is a sign of disrespect. Many people watch the races at home with their families. The F-word is used a lot, but the context and the tone in which someone says it are always important.
But we want to see the emotions of the riders, we need moving moments. I understand that the drivers are flying in extreme conditions, but if we can somehow soften the radio conversations a bit, it will benefit us all.
“I don’t see the point of banning the F-word though. It’s just a street word. There are much worse things.”
