McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown spoke on the Sky Sport F1 podcast about team tactics and the advice he received from Adrian Newey.
McLaren have at times been criticised for their unwillingness to fully focus on supporting Lando Norris in his bid for the world title this year, but Zak believes this is not so clear-cut.
Zak Brown: “It’s very easy to sit on the couch with a beer and watch TV and at the same time drive a Formula 1 team – hundreds of millions of people do it every weekend. But there are more reasons for making decisions than it seems. Of course we make mistakes too. We never say that we couldn’t have done something better this race or this season.
Adrian Newey once said a beautiful phrase: “On Monday it all starts again.” I can’t change the past… you draw conclusions, apply them to the future, but dwelling on what you “could have” or “should have” is a waste of energy. At Silverstone we could have done things differently. But this won’t change anything for a while. Silverstone is long gone.
“We all have bad races where we could have won, but the car broke on the last lap or something. After a race like that, I personally feel uncomfortable, but on Monday morning I have to wake up and move on. I can’t go back to basics, unhappy and depressed. Part of my job, I think, is to motivate everyone.”
