Three Germans accused of blackmailing Schumacher family

German prosecutors have charged three men with allegedly being involved in a plot to blackmail the family of Michael Schumacher.

Their leader was a 53-year-old man from Wuppertal, in western Germany, who is alleged to have threatened to publish private videos and photos of Schumacher unless he was paid €15 million.

Another suspect, a 53-year-old man from Wülfrath, a small town north of Wuppertal, was responsible for the search for photos of Schumacher, which reportedly included pictures taken before and after the 2013 skiing accident in which Michael was injured.

The suspect worked as a security guard for the Schumacher family until 2021. He is said to have sold the material for a “five-figure sum” before the main suspect contacted Schumacher’s family in June 2024 to demand payment, threatening to publish the footage on the dark web.

The third suspect, the suspect’s 30-year-old son from Wuppertal, is accused of complicity in creating an untraceable email address from which material samples were sent to Schumacher’s family.

All three suspects face long prison sentences.
