McLaren announced last week that Will Courtney, who led race strategy at Red Bull Racing, would take over as sporting director at Woking. However, it turned out that this will not happen soon: Courtney can only join McLaren after the expiry of his current contract, which runs until mid-2026.
However, the championship team has already found a replacement for Courtney. Instead, the race strategy department will be led by Hannah Schmitz, co-author of many of the championship team’s victories.
“It is a natural development that when you achieve success, your employees are taken away,” said Helmut Marko about the reshuffle at Red Bull Racing. “There is someone on the team who can take over Will’s position, and that is Hannah Schmitz.”
Courtney was not interested in our new proposal. He received an offer from another team and that turned out to be more attractive financially.”
