Daniil Kvyat: I could fight for the title in Formula 1

Daniil Kvyat drove his last race in Formula 1 in 2020. He then reached certain stages as a reserve driver for the Alpine team and in 2023 he signed a contract with the Lamborghini factory team in endurance racing.

In a recent interview with the Dutch magazine Formula 1, Daniil said that he looks back on his career in Formula 1 with some regret, as he was not able to achieve the maximum.

Daniil Kvyat: “I have mixed feelings when I evaluate my career in Formula 1. I will always remember it, knowing that I didn’t reach my maximum. I had the potential to fight for the title, but in Formula 1 victory or defeat depends on many factors.

The driver is dependent on the car at his disposal. In fact, it is the car that determines who finishes first, fifth and tenth. In other words, the stars must be in your favor to drive the best car.

Of course, to win you have to do a lot of things right, but I want to say that circumstances also have to be on your side. And in my case, they weren’t always in my favor.

I know my capabilities and with a decent car I would certainly have a chance of winning the title. I don’t like big words, so I won’t say that I would have won easily, because Formula 1 is extremely competitive. This has always been the case and so it should be. That is why we all strive to participate in this championship.

Looking back, I understand that my opportunity at Red Bull came when the car was, to say the least, not that good. Of course Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel got their chances at Red Bull when the car was very strong.

Like I said, circumstances had to happen. And I didn’t really like how they turned out in my case.
