Rob Marshall: Extended updates work better

McLaren chief designer Rob Marshall on why his cars’ new products sometimes work more efficiently than their rivals…

Rob Marshall: “Usually teams bring small upgrades each round, like we did with the spar wing in Singapore. But sometimes it’s worth it to wait until all the new parts you were currently planning are ready.

Often individual new products do not fit together well enough, but with a complex update you know that this combination of parts has been developed as one solution, that they have been tested together in the wind tunnel and on CFD computers.

With a comprehensive upgrade you can be sure the parts work well together, while with a piecemeal approach you may upgrade just one part and find that the way the first one works requires adjustments to all subsequent parts.”
