Franco Colapinto’s impressive debut in Formula 1 made Sauber interested in the Argentine driver. Williams boss James Vowles said he is in talks with the Hinvil team over a possible contract for Colapinto.
James Vausle: “Regardless of how events develop, Franco will remain part of our youth academy. We are exploring options for his career next year, in case Audi doesn’t hire him. To clarify the situation, I will say that we are negotiating and want to understand whether this option is suitable for him, and whether he can start using it within two years.
If Franco still stays with us, we will organize tests for him with a car from two years ago, which in many respects has the same specifications as the current one. He will drive thousands and thousands of miles to stay in good shape. Franco will refine the car on the simulator and work on tests at the same time.
At the same time, we are considering different racing series together with Franco, so that he can participate in races at the same time. He remains our backup driver and is ready to drive if anything happens. Over the past twelve months I have learned that the situation with riders is not predetermined.
It’s good for us that we signed a contract with him, but we will look at the situation on the driver market next year. I think there will be more movement. At the same time, another team already has the opportunity to get one of the best available drivers. I think it would strengthen them.”
Valtteri Bottas and Gabriel Bortoleto remain the other contenders for a seat at Sauber next season.
