Danner advises Mick Schumacher to move to IndyCar

Mick Schumacher emphasizes that a return to Formula 1 remains his priority, but according to former driver Christian Danner, the situation can be summarized in three words: “now or never.”

Mick is now in his third season as a reserve driver for Mercedes, but will also race for the factory Alpine team in the endurance races this year. All that is known about his plans for 2025 is that he is not giving up hope of a return to F1.

The Alpine team chose to sign a contract with Jack Duane, and this was done after testing, with the Australian newcomer teaming up with Schumacher, who already had 43 Grand Prix experience.

When Williams needed a driver to replace Logan Sargent, they also gambled on a rookie, a student from their racing academy, Franco Colapinto – and it seems they were right.

But Mercedes also decided to take a risk and signed a contract with 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, so in fact the only vacancy for next season is with Sauber/Audi. Moreover, according to rumors, the Swiss team is inclined to extend the contract with Valtteri Bottas.

“The motto is: now or never. If Mick does not return to Formula 1 in 2025, it means that the train has left,” said Danner in an interview with Sport Bild. “There are too many good young drivers and in 2026, when the technical regulations in the championship change, Mick will no longer have the advantage of knowing the cars of this generation.

But if Mick really loves motorsport, he has many more options. As a driver I can advise him: “Mick, go to IndyCar!”

In 2024, there were a dozen representatives from various European countries in the American series, although not all of them played a full season. Spaniard Alex Palou won his third title in this series and joined the elite of world motorsport, although he did not compete in Formula 1.

There is no doubt that increasing attention will be focused on the son of the seven-time IndyCar world champion, especially since Mick already spoke about his interest in the American series last year, but opted to remain in Europe.
