We talked about how Kimi Raikkonen is preparing intensively with the Trackhouse Racing team for the upcoming NASCAR race and after the first tests, the Finn shared his impressions of how things are going.
Kimi Raikkonen: “I have nothing to compare it to, but it’s great that I was able to get a certain amount of laps in the tests, and even though I wasn’t driving the car I was going to start in the race, it was still very usable .
Not only did I do some laps, but I also enjoyed it. Now I know how the car behaves, which routes to choose, so of course it will be easier for me to adapt when the training starts at Watkins Glen.
I had some experience driving NASCAR cars in 2011, but the new generation cars are clearly much better. In general, the sensations are about what I expected. Before the tests, I was working on the simulator, so I imagined what was in store for me, so everything is going well. Of course, when the tires overheat, the car starts to skid, but this happens with any other technique. In general, while I am satisfied with everything.
We did about 50 laps – without this and without the work on the simulator during practice and qualifying, I would have had a much harder time. And now we have done everything possible in terms of preparation. Watkins Glen is obviously a new track for me and it’s yet to be explored, but we’ll see what we can achieve next weekend.
The team is doing a great job, they are great people, and since I haven’t driven a race car since my last Formula 1 race, it was a lot of fun learning the NASCAR technique!”
