Oscar Piastri made a brilliant debut in Formula 1 last season and this season he opened up his record of race wins, finishing first in Hungary and Azerbaijan. 1978 world champion Mario Andretti believes the Australian McLaren driver has what it takes to win the title.
Mario Andretti: “I’m a big fan of Oscar Piastri. I’ve been watching him closely and I think Zac Brown was wise to pick a pair of pilots like that. I think he has the perfect line-up now. All drivers can fight for pole position, control the race and win.
Oscar has all the necessary qualities to become a champion. He seems to be backing Lando Norris for the title this season, simply because Lando has a better chance in terms of points earned. But at the same time, Oscar is a real fighter and wants to act in his own interests. But in the short period that he has been active in Formula 1, Piastri has shown that he is certainly a future champion.
I congratulate McLaren on the progress they have made this season. They didn’t just shine brightly once, they continually lead the way. At the moment, McLaren is the benchmark for everyone else.”
