Formula 1 committee to discuss increase in sprints

Formula 1 owners Liberty Media had planned to increase the number of Saturday sprint weekends to six this year, but the teams demanded financial compensation beyond the budget constraints, they did not agree to other terms – and at the time of the vote, the proposal was not adopted.

But if in 2021 the vote on changes to the regulations took place quite late and for approval it was necessary to get 28 out of 30 “yes” votes, despite the fact that F1 and FIA each have 10 votes and the teams there have one each.

Today in London there is a meeting with the Formula 1 Commission, which will discuss, among other things, the issue of increasing the number of sprint weekends to six. If it is supported, and the vote on the regulations takes place before May 31, a simple majority of 25 votes will suffice – the FIA and F1 will give 20 votes, so the consent of five teams is enough for approval, which means that the amendment is most likely to be adopted.

Other changes to the sprint weekend format can be discussed and adopted at a later date, now the most important thing for Formula 1 leadership is to get more sprint weekends in the regulations than this season.
