Zak Brown: McLaren was on the brink of bankruptcy

The head of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown, talked about what the situation was in the team at the time he joined the company…

Zac Brown: “I didn’t realize how bad it was because I grew up around McLaren and it was the almighty McLaren. I couldn’t even admit that everything was so bad.

But what I saw was a team that had the worst season in McLaren history, an empty race car with no sponsor stickers, drivers who didn’t want to race for us, and a disgruntled staff that had no leadership that everyone stood for. himself. I heard a lot of mutual accusations, conspiracy theories and saw a complete lack of trust.

It was very clear that the team had lost its way, that we had no direction, that there was chaos and negativity, hence the results. It took some time to correct course, make changes and build a whole new leadership team, one step at a time.

Just as things started to improve, Covid-19 struck. Sponsorship has been stopped and prize money has been significantly reduced. It almost put us out of business. We still had a month or two. We were very close to this, but I always believed that we would find the money, or that the shareholders would make a move in that direction. I was under a lot of stress, but I always felt like we would get through it in the end. And so it happened.

The team has been profitable in recent years, with record sales of “over £500 million” expected to be generated this year.
