Liam Lawson returns to the RB car this weekend in Austin, replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the rest of the season. The New Zealand rider explained when the team informed him of the replacement.
Liam Lawson: “I was told about this in Baku. During the year the situation changed very quickly. Sometimes things were going well for me, but there were also times when things didn’t look very optimistic. However, I always knew I would get behind the wheel this season. I knew about this since last year, because Christian Horner personally promised me.
I knew that the team wanted to test me in the races at some point, but it was not easy to be patient and wait so long. As much as I believed in the team, it became increasingly difficult to wait. And in Baku they informed me about the decision.
The weekend in Singapore was difficult for all of us, but especially for Daniel. We all knew about the situation, but I was lucky that I had virtually no contact with the press, so I was able to stay away.”
Liam Lawson added that he hopes to prove himself worthy of a place at Red Bull Racing with his on-track performances: “It was always about being a Red Bull driver in the future and I’ve always been against that the team said. This is both my goal and their goal: I think they need drivers who can replace the current pilots in the future.
That’s the goal, but I have no idea when it will happen. However, I know it will depend on the results I show behind the wheel.”
