Kubica: I didn’t get the recognition I deserved

Robert Kubica was once considered one of the most talented Formula 1 racers, but in fact his career was cut short by a serious accident the Pole had on the rally circuit in the spring of 2011.

Nevertheless, after showing fantastic will and undergoing many serious surgeries, he was able to return to Formula 1 and also perform quite successfully in endurance racing.

While Robert has a well-deserved reputation as one of motorsport’s heroes, he believes that after all he’s been through, he deserves more recognition.

“After the accident, I didn’t always believe that I could return to Formula 1, so returning to the championship with Williams was my most important achievement in my racing career,” Robert told RacingNews365. – It’s a pity that the team didn’t have the best car in 2019, because because of this the fans don’t remember much about how I came back.

They also managed to forget that I scored one point that year, although it wasn’t easy in the FW42. I am still proud that I was able to achieve this during the German Grand Prix, for me it was a very important moment. It was the culmination of my long journey to get behind the wheel of an F1 car, and indeed come back to life. Unfortunately, few people remember this, but that’s how Formula 1 is.

A pity of course, although I understand on the other hand that many people cannot do what I still do, even after a serious accident, even though I had to start all over again. I really had to relearn everything, but step by step I recovered and even refused previous offers to return to Formula 1. By then I was not ready for it, and if I had made such an effort there would be maybe many injuries come back know .

Driving a Formula 1 car is of course great, but you have to be prepared for this. Now I manage my duties in the Alfa Romeo team, but I spend very little time behind the wheel, because the number of tests is limited. And yet, every time the opportunity presents itself, I enjoy it. Although from the side it is difficult to see how others are performing in races.

I would love to spend another season in Formula 1, but I understand that in reality this is impossible, although I have proven that even in the worst situation you can return to the sport. I know better than anyone what it cost me… I have to admit that in those years I was between life and death, I know what it is, but such trials have only made me stronger. After all this I started to appreciate life much more, although it is a shame that the world of Formula 1 did not appreciate my return, I did not get the recognition I deserved … “
