The Mercedes-EQ Team is saying goodbye to Formula E, but doing it more than with dignity – after winning the world championship in both classifications. Stoffel Vandorn took the podium in the final race of the season, not only securing the title, but also helping Mercedes become the strongest for the second year in a row.
The factory team of the Stuttgart group drove three seasons in Formula E, during which the drivers took seven wins, 23 podiums and two titles. But now the McLaren Formula E Team will be created on its base.
Ian James, Team Principal: “Four years ago, when Mercedes-Benz made the decision to enter Formula E, we didn’t know how it would end. And today, for the second time in a row, we became the championship winners in both classifications – this is a phenomenal success. Congratulations to everyone working in Brackley, Brixworth and Stuttgart!
I have to admit that this is a very emotional moment for me. We can’t wait to return to the Formula E circuit next season, but this will be a new chapter in our team’s history, but for now I plan to celebrate the success with everyone!”
Toto Wolff, Head and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team: “I am incredibly proud of the achievements of our Formula E team, which won the World Championship for the second year in a row. This is an incredible achievement, especially as the first two places in the team standings were taken by teams using cars equipped with Mercedes-manufactured power plants. This clearly shows the strength of our organization.
Congratulations to both riders! Nick de Vries and Stoffel Vandorn were rightly champions. Mercedes-EQ leaves this series on a high note and we will have great memories. It was certainly an interesting trip!.”
