Sam Bird: Norris is angry that he was left without support

Many Russian fans remember Sam Bird from the time when this British racer competed for the Russian Time team in the GP2 series (now Formula 2) and became vice-champion in 2013.

But the next decade of his career was mainly devoted to Formula E, although he combined the electric series with endurance racing, most notably becoming world champion in the LMP2 category in 2014 as part of the Russian team G-Drive Racing.

But that was a long time ago and since this year he has been working in Formula E with the McLaren team and he obviously has his own idea of what things are like for the McLaren team in Formula 1.

When he’s not racing, Sam commentates on Formula 1 on BBC Radio 5 Live, and now he took part in the latest episode of the F1 Checkered Flag podcast and shared his thoughts on yesterday’s qualifying in Mexico- City.

Sam Bird: “Before qualifying we all expected Lando Norris to take pole, but things didn’t go his way. It’s just that Max Verstappen can do what other drivers can’t: in training he didn’t come close to the top three, and in general things weren’t going well for Red Bull, but in qualifying Max showed a 2nd place. This once again emphasizes how good he is.

I think the fact that Oscar Piastri dropped out of contention at the start of qualifying and wouldn’t be able to help his teammate was unpleasant news for Lando. I noticed that after qualifying he seemed a little angry because his teammate couldn’t cover him.

Norris will have to compete against both Ferrari drivers and Max Verstappen, but it is also possible that Mercedes drivers will do so as well. All this makes his life difficult. Let’s put it this way: his pace allows him to claim victory in the race, but it would be better if Piastri could support him somehow. In general, the events on Sunday for Lando can develop well or not so well.”
