Valtteri Bottas: Our pace gives confidence

In Mexico City, the Sauber team once again failed to gain points, but after the finish Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou were optimistic and spoke about progress compared to previous races.

Valtteri Bottas (14th): “I think we got the most out of the car today, although the result was not as good as I had hoped. However, the team has improved and we will take this into the next race.

At the start I was sandwiched between the cars, which limited my ability to gain positions at the back. After that, the race went very simply: we followed the developed strategy and even extended the first segment a few laps longer than planned. This decision probably didn’t have the best impact on the end result, but it is positive that we fought more effectively than recently.

Our pace was close to that of our closest rivals, which gives us confidence for the stages ahead. Now we need to focus on the next updates to make them as effective as the previous ones. We hope that these new products will be ready in the near future and will allow us to take another step forward.”

Guanyu Zhou (15th): “The race turned out to be difficult. In the early laps the brakes started to overheat, requiring me to slow down frequently to cool them down, and this affected the pace. We have yet to determine the cause of the problem.

However, I managed to stay in the fight with my opponents, so we took a step forward. Something like this was impossible to imagine a few races ago – impressive progress.

The team continues to work hard, because the stage in Sao Paulo is just around the corner. We will do everything we can to get even closer to our rivals.”
