Carlos Sainz dreamed of winning another race before the end of the season, and he succeeded in Mexico. Moreover, it was his fans who voted him ‘Driver of the Day’, and that may be fair, because the Spanish Ferrari driver did everything almost perfectly today.
His teammate, Charles Leclerc, had a slightly more difficult time, but he was not only able to finish third, but also record the best lap of the race, which earned him and Ferrari an extra bonus point.
Carlos Sainz (1st): “Thank you, Mexico City! It’s incredibly joyful to see a whole sea of fans supporting you, I felt it from the beginning of the weekend! I know that many people in Mexico are behind me, and this gave me special strength, which allowed me to succeed!
To be honest, I really wanted to win this race, even for myself. I wanted to get one more win before saying goodbye to Ferrari, and to do that in front of such a great crowd was just incredible fun!
There are still four races to go until the end of the season, and I want to have as much fun as possible, and if I get the chance to get another win, I will try not to miss it!
To be honest, I hadn’t even prepared to overtake Max Verstappen. I was a little annoyed that he was ahead of me at the start, and I understood that I had to surprise him somehow. Overtaking Max is very difficult, he has proven that before and even though I was quite far away from his car, I had nothing to lose.
All weekend I was confident going into Turn 1 and knew I could do it…”
Charles Leclerc (3rd): “It was a difficult race. In the first stint the most important thing was to try to keep the tires and brakes at the right temperature, and although that wasn’t easy, we did our best.
I was at a disadvantage all weekend and third place was the best I could achieve. But Carlos had a great race and overall the team did a great job this weekend.
We all work very well together as one team and have already completed several races in a row at the level we should have. Our goal remains the Constructors’ Championship and weekends like this bring us closer to that goal. I hope we can continue on this path and win the championship in the team competition.”
