Wolff: Now the most important thing is to get rid of the build-up

Mercedes started the season in vain, there is no question of previous dominance. The bounce effect on the straights forces you to raise the suspension height, which reduces the aerodynamic efficiency and speed of the car.

Team boss Toto Wolff thinks that if the pendulum problem is solved and the suspension height is lowered, the car will go much faster…

Toto Wolff: “All indications are that if we lower the suspension height, the aerodynamics of the car will work. But we can’t do that because of the build. Now the main thing is to get rid of the build-up. Once we’ve dealt with this, we’ll spend a lot of time playing on the circle. If not, we need another idea.

Now all the good and the bad is tied to the bottom. We have interesting ideas, we will try to test them in the next races. So far, we don’t believe we’ve made a mistake with the concept of the car. We may have misinterpreted the new rules.

But we don’t want to give up this project and move on to a new one. You should focus on areas that prevent you from realizing the potential of this machine, and try to minimize losses for that.

This means that the question must be asked as follows: where is the basis from which to build? Is there a new starting point from which we can start over and exploit the machine’s potential more fully?

If we had known the answer, we would have done it five months ago. But we think we should go further and find the problem. Only by realizing what you did wrong can you move on to developing the car for the next year. But we’re not doing that yet.”
