Oscar Piastri thinks that Lando Norris, his McLaren teammate, still has a chance to overtake Max Verstappen in the individual competition, but the situation in the remaining races could develop differently. Oscar knows this about himself…
Oscar Piastri: “I was much happier with the car in Mexico City than in Austin. On the American circuit our MCL38 was fast, but it was very difficult to drive, especially in qualifying. In the race the pace was a little slower, which made it a little easier, but in Mexico City I was much more satisfied with the car’s behavior, although the result does not reflect this.
But I felt much more comfortable behind the wheel. It’s all the more disappointing that I messed up my qualifications. Still, it would be better if the weekend went like it did in Mexico, where I at least felt comfortable even if I made a mistake, than like in Austin, where I couldn’t get the right speed out of the car.
Our team leads the Constructors’ Championship and although we always understood that Ferrari was a threat, I wouldn’t say we feel the pressure is increasing. Since Monza they have had a very fast car, but they have not been able to fully utilize its potential every weekend.
All in all, we’re not really surprised that Ferrari has shown so much speed lately, but we’ll see if their run of success continues. We know what to expect from them, so the end of the season promises to be exciting.
I think Lando can still overtake Max in the individual competition, although that will obviously not be easy. At the same time, it is clear that the further development of the events depends on both, because even if Lando wins all the remaining races and Max finishes second, he will still win the title.
The three top teams – McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari – are engaged in a very intense battle, with Mercedes periodically intervening, and the likelihood that events could develop according to any scenario is still very high. That’s why I believe Lando still has a chance.”
