Max Verstappen: With the new asphalt it has only gotten worse

Max Verstappen set the fourth fastest time in qualifying for the sprint of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing driver explained the lack of speed by the bumps on the track, which, after the asphalt was completely renewed, became more numerous than before. His teammate Sergio Perez qualified thirteenth.

Max Verstappen (4th): “As soon as qualifying started, we saw that we were losing speed. The car was difficult to drive on bumps. This year they completely rebuilt the asphalt, but they only made it worse! Extreme bumps throughout the lap, and this doesn’t suit our car. The car bounced a lot on bumps, which unfortunately caused me to lose quite a lot of time.

I don’t know what to expect from tomorrow. If you lose quite a lot in one lap, you should not expect a particularly strong performance in the race. Let’s see how the sprint goes. The weather can disrupt the process, but that may not happen in the sprint.”

Sergio Perez (13th): “The first part of qualifying went well, but in the second there were balance problems. We adjusted the settings slightly to help eliminate the understeer caused by the changing track conditions. This affected our program and unfortunately I didn’t have time for a second fastest lap.”
