Kyalami Circuit has begun the process of obtaining a Grade 1 license to reinstate the South African Grand Prix on the calendar.
The last South African Grand Prix took place in March 1993. In recent years there have been attempts to revive this race, but until now there is no physical place to hold it. There are no tracks in Africa with a Grade 1 license and associated infrastructure.
To create it, the owners of the Kyalami circuit invited Apex Circuit Design. The company has extensive experience in Formula 1, in particular they designed and built the circuit for the Miami Grand Prix.
An official statement was made on this occasion: “With Kyalami’s rich history of hosting Formula 1 races, the circuit is ideally suited to return to the calendar. The track owners and Apex are working together to prepare Kyalami for a Grade 1 license.
Negotiations with interested parties, including Formula 1 owners Liberty Media, are ongoing. South Africans can be assured that everything will be ready for their return to Formula 1.”
