Stewards of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix have fined Max Verstappen after the finish of Saturday’s sprint at the Interlagos circuit.
The Red Bull Racing driver committed a violation during the virtual safety car mode. The Sports Regulations state that when this mode is disabled, the driver may not be closer to the vehicle in front than the calculated minimum time. Max Verstappen exceeded the minimum time by 0.63 seconds – in other words: he was closer to Oscar Piastri than allowed by the regulations.
For the violation, Max received a five-second penalty on his result at the finish of the sprint and, according to protocol, moved from third to fourth place, behind Charles Leclerc.
In addition, Verstappen received one penalty point. He now has seven points over the twelve-month period. If a rider gains twelve points in twelve months, he skips the next stage.
