James Vowles, head of Williams Racing, explained on Sky Sports what the team is doing in a situation where qualifying has been postponed until further notice from race management due to weather conditions. The point is to use this time to intensively prepare for track work in rainy conditions.
James Vowles: “First of all, we base this on information collected in recent years during rain sessions at this circuit. In 2016, such a race took place here, and then it was very interesting. Also in 2019 I had to work on a wet track.
But now we are dealing with different tires, moreover, the asphalt surface here has been completely renewed, and at the same time we need to understand how the tires will work in these conditions, how well will they warm up?
Franco Colapinto faces a particularly difficult challenge as he has never ridden on heavy rain tires or intermediate tires. Therefore, urgent measures should be taken to help him prepare, because he must understand how to act to try to warm the rubber, but not damage the surface.
If we talk about tomorrow’s Grand Prix, then in the past before the rainy race we made quite significant adjustments to the settings, in particular we increased the ground clearance, but now we are not changing much. We will make some adjustments, but only to achieve a more efficient operation of the rubber. But we will not change the level of downforce as we believe it is optimal and suitable for both dry weather and rainy conditions.”
