Liam Lawson: The car didn’t have enough speed to hold off Perez

Liam Lawson came close to scoring points in the sprint at the Interlagos circuit, but let Sergio Perez take the lead in the final laps in the battle for eighth place. The New Zealand driver’s RB teammate Yuki Tsunoda finished fifteenth.

Liam Lawson (9th): “I think the car had speed, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Pierre Gasly – even with DRS I wasn’t close enough to attack. I was stuck behind him for most of the sprint, and when Sergio overtook me, the car didn’t have enough speed to keep him at bay.

I ended up having a lot of bad luck with the virtual safety car mode. Everything that happened in the sprint happened at the wrong time. It’s frustrating, but it was still a good sprint because we had the pace. I will continue attacking on Sunday.”

Yuki Tsunoda (15th): “I had a good start in the sprint, but after that I unfortunately didn’t have the speed to make up ground. After the finish we looked at the telemetry and I think we discovered something. I hope this will help me get better on Sunday.

It’s a shame we couldn’t qualify. It is especially sad for the fans who waited so long in the stands in wet and cold weather. Now it is important to prepare for Sunday’s qualifying and race.”
